Oh Calcutta!
January 06, 2018
It’s been a really long time
since I’ve blogged. Planning to commit and make it a weekly thing soon. Today’s
one is gonna be about my December travels. Went to three states- West Bengal,
Assam and Meghalaya..
The first stop was Calctutta.
I wasn’t too keen on going to the place but then upon landing and spending
a few seconds in the city, I fell in love with it. The entire city is lively-
be it the people or the buildings. The
first thing that caught my eye was the yellow taxis. I could never get enough
of it. No matter how many times I looked at it, it always fascinated me. Taxi spam in 3, 2, 1...
The Calcutta trip was kinda
divided. Spent a day and then travelled to the other states and then landed
back in Cal. The first day I went to New Market and Park Street. One good thing
about Cal is that the people know how to enjoy festivals. The entire city was
decorated with lights to the extent that not even a single lamppost was
sparred. New Market was a nice crowded bustling market area with clothes,
earrings and what not. (The earring collections were fab btw). Park Street gave
an image of mini abroad with top notch stores and restaurants. One attractive
thing about the city is the fusion in terms of architecture- you have the
colonial as well as modern buildings and somehow they go well together.
(New and Hogg Market)
(Park Street)
(Inside the famous Flurrys)
Couldn’t resist binging on
some street food- in my case just pani puri
One of the nights, went to my
dad’s landlord’s house for dinner. Was presented with a traditional Bengali
feast. (I couldn’t finish it)
When you’re here, there are a
few places you shouldn’t miss out
*Victoria Memorial
*Dalhousie- for those of who
are fascinated with lights, like me, this is a real treat
*Howrah Bridge: Went on a
ferry ride and crossed from one side of the city to another on Hoogli River
Took a bus to visit all these
places. Even that was colorful
In between took a day and went
to Shantiniketan, saw the famous Visva Bharthi University and also had a tour
of Mr. Tagore’s many houses
So that’s the end of my Cal
trip. Would have loved to have a few more days to explore the city and definitely wouldn’t
mind going there for a second or a third time. I'll be back soon with more from Assam and Meghalaya
