Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

October 12, 2016

So I was randomly listening to the Soundtrack from Cinderella on Youtube when the next video started playing. I wasn’t paying much attention to it as I was preoccupied with something else but the song was so appealing that I kept it on repeat! It was during my 4th time listening to the it that I noticed it was sung by a few members of Exo so I tuned into the video and I am so glad that I did

The time I saw its first trailer, it instantly won by heart! After seeing Descendants of the Sun I thought no other drama would be able to occupy the No.1 position but Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was beyond my expectation! Words cannot express what I have to say but each and every episode left me craving for more and honestly I didn’t want it to end! It would be amazing if it could have multiple seasons!
The storyline takes a creative twist to the actual history of the Goryeo dynasty in Korea. The drama is the Korean adaptive of the Chinese book ‘Bu Bu Jing Xin’. Take a look at what's in store for you and I promise that you won't be disappointed.

During a total eclipse of the sun Go Ha Jin (I.U) a 21st century girl, who is going through a rough patch in life, drowns and awakens in the body of ‘Hae Soo’. She encounters Chae Ryung (Jin Ki Joo) and Myung Hee (Park Si Eun). Thinking that they have confused her with someone else she slowly begins to realize that she isn’t in the Korea she knows and in fact has been transported back to the Goryeo Dynasty of Korea which currently was being ruled by Emperor Taejo Kang Geon.

Although quiet confused and terrified at first, she realizes that destiny has given her another chance to live and must adapt to this new environment.
She is approached by the husband of her cousin, 8th Prince Wang Wook (Kang Ha Neul) who assured her that he will help her get through the tough times.
Wang Wook is the son of the King’s 4th Queen; Queen Hwangbo. He is a man of great intellect and is married to Hae Household’s Myung Hee who suffers from an illness that could put her life in grave danger. Despite knowing this he doesn’t take a second wife and remains loyal to her till the very end.
Always having treated her like a younger sister, Wook begins to realizes that Hae Soo is a different person altogether after her accident. He loved being around her and was his ‘source of happiness’ for she was different and always did stupid things that got her in trouble. And for the long awaited question; does he fall for her?

Known as the ‘Wolf Dog’, 4th Prince Wang So (Lee Joon Gi) is one who is feared by all. He hides behind a mask and there was not a single thing; living or dead that was sparred after seeing him without it. He is the unloved child of the King’s 3rd Queen; Queen Yoo ,who was sent hostage to Shinju to live along with his adoptive mother. The scar he received when he was a kid forever haunts him

Out of all the people he has come across in life, Hae Soo is perhaps the only one who doesn’t fear him. While he thinks that she might run away from him or call him a ‘monster’ like everyone else, her reactions always surprise him. At the sight of blood she doesn’t concern herself with whom he’s killed rather if he is unharmed or not. These small kind gestures that he had never received from anyone in his life moves him and before he begins to realize it he falls for her!

She is the only person who has touched his face and also plays an important role in healing the biggest scar in his life. He is the one who is always there for her and is willing to risk his own life in order to protect her. The drama witnesses a lot of cute moments between the two and I know for a fact that most of you will be rooting for this couple *_*

EXO’s Baekhyun plays the role of the 10th Prince Wang Eun. His character is pretty much similar to his real self for he is this bundle of joy and a very bubbly presence in the drama. Although they started off on the wrong foot, Hae Soo and Eun develop a deep friendship as the series progresses. This is Baekhyun’s first ever drama and I personally think he did a pretty good job with it. He shares a special bond with Park Soon Suk (Z.Hera) as the series progresses

Nam Joo Hyuk is the 13th Prince Baek Ah, who is very close to Lady Hae. He is an ardent painter and a musician and quiet multi-talented I must say. We come to realize that he was in fact in love with Lady Hae but was unable to marry her due to his low status. He initially despises Hae Soo due to the fact that she and Wook have some chemistry going on but later in the series he becomes a very important friend to her. He also has a new love interest; Woo Hee that is played by Girls Generations’ Seohyun.

Ji Soo plays the role of the youngest prince; the 14th Prince Wang Jung. He shares the same mother as Wang So, but unlike him he is considered his mother’s favorite. He is a person who loves to fight and often sneaks out of the palace to have matches with the commoners. After an incident, when Hae Soo saves his life, he begins to look up to her as an elder sister.

He and Baek Ah have a really good bromance in the series considering that they are really good friends in reality. After seeing him play the hot gangster friend of Park Shin Hye in ‘Doctors’, is it quiet refreshing to see him being portrayed in a different light; although the badass aspect still remains.

Hong Jong Hyun plays the role of the evil 3rd Prince; Wang Yo. He is the brother of Jung and So and is his mother’s favorite child. Queen Yo desires him to be the one to sit on the throne and plots a number of evil schemes in order to get him there.
Yoon Sun Woo plays the 9th Prince Wang Won who is acquainted with the 3rd Prince and aids him in his various plots. Although he looks like someone who would be kind and gentle, as the drama progresses we get to see his true character.
(From left to right)
Queen Yoo (Park Ji Young) - King Taejo’s Third wife and mother of Wang Yo, So and Jung
Queen Hwangbo (Jung Kyun Soon) - King Taejo’s fourth wife and mother of Wang Wook and Princess Yeon-Hwa. She was exiled from the palace by Queen Yoo
Princess Yeon-Hwa (Kang Ha Na) - Daughter of Queen Hwangbo. A strong willed woman who will do anything it takes to see her brother on the throne
The graceful and elegant Court Lady Oh is played by Woo Hee Jin. She is the concubine of the King and perhaps the one woman he has ever loved. She acts as a motherly figure to Hae Soo and treats her as her own daughter. She deeply cares for her and tries to ensure that Soo doesn’t end up like her
(From left to right)
Chae Ryung (Jin Ki Joo) – Hae Soo’s maid and friend
Woo Hee (Seohyun) – The last princess of Later Baekje. She falls in love with 13th Prince Baek Ah
Park Soon Dook (Z.Hera) – the daughter of General in command and has been loved in love with 10th Prince Eun. She later becomes his wife
Ji Mong ( Kim Sung Kyun) is the astrologer and close friend to the King. He resembles the person that Hae Soo met back in her owl world right before she drowned. It is later revealed that he too, is like Hae Soo, who had died and had come back as whole new person who could sometimes see the future. Crown Prince Wang Moo is played by Kim San Ho. He is a very kind and generous person. Due to his position, he is often protected by Wang So but he too has a secret that cannot be revealed to others else it will spell trouble.

This is my very first historical drama and I initially thought that this genre in particular would be boring but never again shall I think that way. Honestly, no other drama can ever top this one. Everything was outstanding right from its cast, the story line, the songs, the romance, the fights to its twists and turns. So definitely make sure that you do not miss out on this one

I pretty much expected the ending but somewhere down the line I thought maybe it could have ended differently. I really hope there is a second season to it cause this is definitely not the end that I was expecting. I’ve never rated any other drama above 8.5 but this one for me is a 10/10 as everything is absolutely stunning and there can never be anything more perfect than this one

After seeing this one I actually went and read about the Goryeo Dynasty of Korea in order to find out the actual events in history and never have I ever been more interested. I've already seen the drama three times and I don't think I can ever get fed up of it. Here's another trailer...
And that's me signing off for now! I've not no more dramas to review for awhile but I'll be sure to upload some fashion and lifestyle related posts. Don't forget to watch this one. Baaaiiii
